If you want to make a good impression on Valentines Day why don’t you attempt one of these ‘tried and tested’ cocktails that I have made up especially for the occasion. They taste divine!
‘Dr Love’
2 oz. Gin
1 Egg White
1/2 tsp. Lemon Juice
1/2 tsp. Raspberry Juice
Method - Shake it really well and add to crushed ice then serve.
‘Cupid’s Arrow’
1 Shot White Rum
1 Shot Disaronno Amaretto
4 Strawberrys
1 Shot Double Cream
Method - Blend all ingredients together with ice until smooth. Then pour into a hurricane/wine glass which has a garnish of fresh strawberry on the rim.
‘Silky Knickers’
0.75 Shot Vodka
1 Shot Disaronno Amaretto
0.5 Shot Kahlua
Method - Layer all ingredients in a glass, Disaronno first, then the Kahlua, then the Vodka.
Valentines is fast approaching and if you are like most December’s Christmas pressies went a little over budget and it’s time to pay back that credit card.
SO, what can you do that’s cheap, romantic and will get you huge points from your partner without looking like you’ve scrimped to buy some god awful tatty pressie for them. Well the solution is simple – put all of that love into making a meal for them, with the added twist of a surprise you’ll be on a banker for sure.
‘What can I cook then?’ I hear you saying, well lucky old you has someone like me to give you some classic valentines recipes that will have their heart melting and their taste buds tickling:
STARTER
Baked Brie in the Box (£3-£5 max)
It’s so easy, incredibly cheap and amazingly tasty. Just buy a small box of Brie, take it out of its paper wrapper and put it back in its box, then whack it in the oven for 10 minutes. Serve with fresh strawberries, French bread and apple on the side and just dip the lot in the gooey mess. It’s almost like a cheap fondue.
1 small french loaf, pop and fresh bake
8 ounce wheel of Brie cheese
box of strawberries and an apple
MAIN
Moules Pasta (£5-£10 max)
Sounds and looks tricky BUT it’s amazingly cheap and easy! Buy a bag of mussels from your local fishmonger or supermarket. Clean them (pulling the beard off them). Cook your linguine pasta separately. Combine all other ingredients in large pot. Steam 3-5 minutes or until all mussels are open. Pour mussels and broth over the linguine. Serve with garlic bread. Instant love!!!
12 mussels per person
1 c. white wine
2 bay leaves
3 cloves garlic, chopped
1/4 c. fresh parsley
Salt and pepper
1 lb. linguine
PUDDING
Home made Chocolate Mousse
Every woman I know and every woman they in turn knows loves chocolate. Men are big fans too. This is SO simple and cheap that I couldn’t leave it out! Place chocolate and milk in a heat proof bowl, set over a saucepan of boiling water and stir constantly until melted and smooth (mixture will be quite thick). Remove and cool slightly. Place yolks and sugar in a large bowl and beat with an electric mixer for 5 minutes, until thick and creamy. Beat cream with an electric mixer in a bowl then gently fold through chocolate mixture with a spatula until just combined. Spoon into 12 x 1/2 cup capacity dishes and chill for 4 hours, until set. Serve with fresh berries if desired. It serves 12 so you have loads to cover each other in and lick off!
Preparation Time - 15 minutes Cooking time - 5 minutes Chilling time - 4 hours
300 g (1 1/2 cups) dark chocolate, chopped
2 tablespoons milk
6 egg yolks
100 g (scant 1/4 cup) confectioner’s sugar
500 ml (2 cups) thickened cream
Fresh berries (optional) to serve
