What’s happened to good old English chivalry eh?!
It’s custom to ask her fathers’ permission before you go ahead and pop the question, and it’s a huge mark of respect to a family. You may think it’s outdated and not the done thing anymore, but before you disguard the importance of asking her dad for her hand in marriage, read the benefits and steps to take below:
Benefits:
• You will be immediately welcomed into the family and her old man will accept you in a new light and the bond deepened
• She will see the romantic side in you and it will make her love you more
• She’ll be more at ease if she knows she has her dad’s OK
• If dad says ‘yes’ it’s a good chance you have captured his spirit with the whole ‘giving precious daughter away’ thing and will more likely help you out financially to make it a great day
How to approach it:
Step 1 – Be sure you wanna commit for the rest of your life. Marriage is not a half hearted thing
Step 2 – Ask him casually if he’d like to go to a ‘game’ or go play golf or something he enjoys – or you have in common
Step 3 – Drop the bombshell just before he beats you at golf, or at a suitable time when you have quiet time together.
Step 4 – Be sure to explain why you feel you are suited to his daughter and your true feelings; every dad can spot a liar when it comes to their daughter
Step 5 – Explain how you want to make his daughter happy and mention some of the plans you have to do this. Bringing up the notion of kids is almost always a winner. Also be sure to discuss how you will embrace her faith for the wedding if there is a need
Step 6 – Get into the bar and have a large scotch together, sealing his approval.
If he says ‘NO’
Understand what his objections are, try to reason with them, and if they are verified concerns then think very carefully to yourself whether or not you are doing the right thing. If you are still adamant then go for it – life is just too short!
