Choosing the perfect diamond engagement ring… read this first!

It’s arguably the biggest occasion in a ladies life, her true love proposes to her and in doing so makes a pledge to remain faithful and be part of that person’s life until ‘death do us part’.

As a fella the whole notion of choosing a suitable ring is actually quite scary… is it too small, too big, what colour ring would she like, which jeweller should I buy it from, or shall I buy it from that shady looking bloke on the corner who has a stash of jewellery in his pockets?

There’s so much choice out there and every ring has a personality… just make sure it reflects hers!

Well firstly, don’t go anywhere near that bloke on the corner, that’s common sense!

This article will hopefully make it easier to determine what ring is most suitable and ultimately what will make your princess happy.

If you are a true gent you will have asked her father for her hand inn marriage, and if you are lucky enough to get his blessing you’re ¼ there.  Confide in her mum (you’ll get brownie points here too for in-law relations), ask her what sort of rings she likes, used to wear, talked about etc. If you are confident in her friends keeping a secret, maybe confide in 1 or 2 of them and ask the same questions.

Secondly, think back to times when your bride to be may have commented on how nice someone’s ring is. No doubt your wife to be will have a style of jewellery, she will normally either like gold or silver (colour that is), and most of her jewellery will be this colour.  Safe bet is to narrow down to this colour and then look at the options.

Next question is “how much money do I spend on it?”.  The love of your life will love you to pieces anyway so don’t go getting yourself into massive amounts of debt just to please her, remember that you have a wedding to save for now!  A good guide is two months salary.

Choosing a ring is no quick exercise and you should certainly take your time to get it right.  Always go with gut feel and know that this is an investment in both of your futures, as well as a fashion statement for her, so the design and your thought into it should reflect her personality.

In terms of getting the finger size right, tricky one.  Casually take her to a jewellers and try out some ‘dressy’ rings for the right hand index finger and remember the size.  This should be a spontaneous decision to look at a ‘dress’ ring so don’t give anything away and build it up as anything else at this stage.

The rest is up to you, good luck and congratulations for when she says yes.

Some of the different places to suit different pockets:

Tiffany & Co. - Higher end creates that special impression.

Blue Nile - Online retailers are plenty, but this one looks middle of the line - good.

Argos - You cheapscate! Don’t expect her to get too excited, and if she does, you know she’s a pikie (trailer slag)!!!
