Here are a few behavioural things to look out for that will give you a good indication as to whether or not to stick with it for the longer term. In no paticullar order:

– Has an interest in what you have to say and doesn’t focus attention on themselves.

– Does not overstep the mark on their views regarding morrality issues (e.g. immigrants let into country etc)

– Actually carries out what they say they will do. Doesn’t matter when so much.

– Not hung up over issues from childhood days, and if they are, they should be able to accept them and move on.

– Is financially responsible. If all they talk about is spending £££ then ask yourself how far are they into debt or how do they finance spending.

– Your friends and family accept them. Ask their opinions and they will give it to you straight!

– They shouldn’t dominate too much. If their beliefs or religion is such that it is controlling then beware, you may end up being uncomfortably dominated.

– You laugh at the same things. Humour in relationships is one of the most important aspects to a healthy life together. Without it it’s very boring!

– Work life balance should be healthy. Even if you both work very hard, you will need to sacrifice work time for pleasure together.

– They support you in what you want to achieve in life. Whether this be buying you a book about a possible career change OR helping you by just talking, if you have this respect for each other you’ll be on the right track.

– You can both settle your differences amicably. Any signs of trouble, be aware that it is trouble and have a good think about whether or not it’s really worth it.

– If they make a mistake, they deal with it in whatever way it needs to be dealt with.
