Valentines Day is all about treating that someone special and you can’t go far wrong if you buy a nice bottle of plonk and cuddle up in front of the fireplace.

Here’s a list of my top 10 most romantic wines full of flavour and body.

Cheeky Reds

Côtes du Rhône 2003, E Guigal (£8 approx)
Guigal’s Côtes du Rhône shares the rich berry fruits and spicy tannins of many more expensive wines from the region. Superb with rich meat dishes or strong cheeses.

Rioja Reserva 2002, Berberana (£10 approx)
A perfectly made Rioja with at least two years ageing in oak. Delicious vanilla overtones backed up by juicy soft strawberry flavours.

Kangarilla Road Cabernet Sauvignon 2004, McLaren Vale (£10 approx)
A rich, full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon from the highly acclaimed Kangarilla Road winery. Aged for 18 months in both French and American oak, this wine shows classic blackcurrant and blackberry fruit flavours, enhanced by hints of mint and plenty of toasty oak and cedar notes on the palate. Smooth and velvety, revealing sweet tannins on the finish, it is drinking well now and for the next five to seven years.

Crisp Whites

Yering Frog Chardonnay 2005, Yarra Valley (£7 approx)
Yering Station’s neighbouring frogs helped to coin this elegant Chardonnay. Refreshing citrus and grapefruit characteristics are backed up with well-integrated French oak.

Saintsbury Chardonnay 2005, Carneros (£17 approx)
Complex if on a modest scale, with ripe pear, fig, apricot and melon notes, shaded by light vanilla-tinged oak and a touch of hazelnut.

Fairleigh Estate Single Vineyard Chardonnay 2004, Marlborough (£8 approx)
Reserve in style, this varietal Chardonnay is filled with ripe, concentrated, tropical and citrus flavours. Handpicking coupled with time honoured traditional winemaking techniques from Burgundy have resulted in a richly flavoured and finely structured wine.

Randy Rosés

Codorniu Pinot Noir Rose NV, Spain (£8 approx)
Codorniu Pinot Noir is a rosado Cava produced from the famous Pinot Noir grape. The nose is reminiscent of ripe summer fruits such as raspberries and strawberries and the palette is refreshing and lively with a zesty citrus finish.

Neblina Merlot Rosé 2006, Central Valley (£5 approx)
A true New World rosé, with intense colour and mouthwatering red fruit characters.

Champaign Charlies!

Duval-Leroy Vintage 2000, Champagne (£30 approx)
Aged for 5 years in the famous ‘Crayeres’, the palate is rich and robust, with dried fruit and citrus flavours. Superbly balanced and elegant.

De Telmont Grande Réserve NV (£20 approx)
The wine is medium bodied, with good soft fruits and a classically yeasty style.
