Who should pay on the first date?

It’s that horrible moment at the end of a date when the bill arrives and you both avoid eye contact… well you don’t need to. If you are a true gent you will have asked her out and therefore should be prepared to meet the bill. No excuses boys, keep chivalry alive!

However, if you are a lady and the thought of this makes you uncomfortable as it makes you feel you now owe him something, then I suggest you offer to go Dutch (50/50 on the bill). He will probably fight this, but just say you won’t have it any other way. Try to establish this before you go to the restaurant, it saves any embarrassment and difficultness.

An alternative suggestion for early dates is going for coffee rather than a meal, it’s relatively inexpensive so no qualms about paying and you don’t need get embarrassed by someone you just met watching you eat. Once you have a good rapport, that’s possibly when the trust is built and awkwardness diffused and the time to go eat out together, and fit the bill if it’s your suggestion!

Money is always a difficult subject to raise; therefore you should take the initiative to diffuse if there are hints of it getting difficult.
